Amiens Cathedral West Facade - the 'Virtues & Vices' Quatrefoils

The quatrefoils of the central portal contain a longer than usual set of paired virtues and vices. Normally, the upper
image consists of a seated personification of a virtue (usually female), carrying a shield emblazoned with the emblem
of that virtue (unusually, 05 - Charity also 'enacts' herself by handing a cloak to a beggar). In each case the corresponding
vice is shown in the lower quatrefoil and, as usual, these are enacted. Some of the vices follow the familiar forms seen
elsewhere (e.g. on the west facade of Notre Dame de Paris) but one or two are unique to Amiens.

To View any quatrefoil in detail, click on one of the thumbnail images below the plan. The 'next' and 'previous'
buttons on the detail pages follow a simple top to bottom / left to right order. To browse through all the quatrefoils, click here.
