Panel 08 - Becket's murder (modern)

Description:
Either this design was originally intended for a martyrdom of St Denis, or the 19th century artist who created this
panel (presumably Gaudin) was a little unsure of the details of Becket's story - he has shown a conventional decapitation
(with a hint of cephalophory in the way the saint has caught his severed head) rather than the usual sword blows to the
top of Becket's head (see the example at
Chartres). More importantly he has shown an exterior scene (stylised tree on the right), rather than the all important
'death in the cathedral'.
