According to his vita, the episode in which Maurille prayed for the destruction of a local pagan temple happened shortly after his arrival at Angers as a young priest. Nevertheless the artists have followed the convention and shown him effecting the miracle in his more familiar guise as a bishop. Maurille built a church over the ashes of the temple, establishing the community that would grow into the town of Chalons.
