Overview: | ||||||
See Luke 16:19-31 for the Parable of the rich man and the beggar. Although Christ mentions the latter by name (Lazarus), he does not give a name for the rich man; the conventional name "Dives" is simply medieval Latin for wealth/riches. The rather sketchy story told in the parable has been fleshed out with details from Christ's similitude in Luke 12:16-21. In particular this explains the events in panels 4-6, as well as adding a certain piquancy to the detail of a servant stealing his ex-master's posessions in panel 14 (see notes to panel 6 for details of the similitude). | ||||||
