The legends of St Martin of Tours are based mainly on the writings of
Sulpitius Severus (AD 363-420), a presbyter and close companion of Martin.
As well as his "Sacred history of the World" (covering the period
from Creation to AD400), Sulpitius' surviving ouvre includes the Life
of St Martin, the Dialogues (which also mainly deals with Martin)
and assorted letters. The 1894 English edition of Sulpitius' works are
available on-line here.
