Panel B3 - John smashes gemstones with a hammer?
Description:
A difficult scene to identify with any certainty. Voragine's version of the legend tells how, whilst walking through Ephesus one day, John encounters the stoic philospher Cratus persuading two of his followers to smash all their precious gemstones as a way of showing their contempt for earthly things. John intervenes, making the stones whole again and ordering that they should be sold to provide money for the poor. Here, by contrast, we seem to have John himself, in front of Domitian, smashing something with a hammer.
