The importance medieval Christendom placed on the corporeal remains of the early martyrs is reflected hagiographically, not just in the stories of posthumous miracle-working but also in the development of topoi regarding their persecutors' efforts to prevent the recovery and preservation of their relics. Dumping at sea features in the legends of various saints, as does leaving the body where it will be eaten by wild animals. St Vincent's life is unusual in featuring both of these episodes.
