Panel A6 - Denis picks up his severed scalp and carries it away
The question of whether Denis' head was cut off in toto or whether the executioner just sliced off the top of his skull was of considerable importance in the ecclesiastical politics of medieval France. The Abbey of St Denis claimed to have his whole body and skull, whereas the Chapter of Paris Cathedral claimed to have the top of his cranium as its most treasured relic. The Chapter at Tours Cathedral are making their allegiances clear here by favouring the Notre Dame version.
