Panel A2 - The old man tries to thank Nicholas, who flees from him
This is the follow-up to the familiar story of the poor old man with three daughters, who Nicholas saves from prostitution through his act of anonymous generosity. He throws three bags of gold through the old man's window on successive nights to provide dowries for his three daughters. On the third night, the old man chases after him, desparate to thank his unknown benefactor. Nicholas flees him out of his deep sense of modesty.
Here a rather thoughtless restorer (presumably in the late 19th century) has confused matters somewhat by giving the father a very youthful face.
