Panel D4 - Martial preaching
Backed by his two companians, Martial addresses an unseen crowd, his face tilted up and one hand raised slightly. The stylised shrub in front of the saint simply denotes an exterior setting.
This is one of a group of panels, along with A5 and C4 (and in a slightly modified form, C6), where the artist has re-used the same vidimus - the life-sized cartoon on which the glass pieces and lead cames were assembled. As well as saving time and money, this creates a visual repetition which may have been viewed favouably by contemporary audiences as an instance of the rhetorical device of amplificatio - here serving to emphasise the extent and importance of Martial's evangelising.
