Panel 14 - Adam dwelling in Paradise

<< previous scene | next scene >>

A rare image of Adam enjoying life in the Garden of Eden before the creation of Eve! In his left hand Adam holds a bunch of grape-like fruit and reaches out for more with his right. This is therefore an image of the first part of God's warning to Adam in Genesis 2:16-17 - "(16) And He commanded him, saying: Of every tree of paradise thou shalt eat: (17) But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat. for in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt die the death"

Clearly this image of Adam, living alone in Paradise and obeying God's command, is meant to contrast with the act of disobedience depicted in the roundel directly above it (panel 18).
