Panel 29 - Josias is beheaded before Herod

 © Stuart Whatling, 2009

Description:

Herod sits in the cross-legged position usually employed to denote a ruler. He holds a sword (not a sceptre as sometimes claimed). The hand of God appears from a cloud frill, holding the crown of martyrdom.
