Panel 01 - Signature panel (Water carrier)
Given the position of Chartres on a steep bluff above the River Eure, the men who delivered water to the upper town were an important component of the urban work-force. Most of the more water-intensive industries like milling, fulling and tanning, were squeezed in along the crowded river-bank, which retains many of its old mill-races and leats. All water for domestic use or building work in the upper town had to be dragged up there by brute force.
Unusually for the 'trade' panels at Chartres, the water carriers have not been depicted directly but are instead represented by figures derived from Classical personifications of rivers.
