Panel 21 - The crook gives the Jew his staff to hold and swears he has returned his money
Panel 21 -
For the full story see panel 23. Here the swindler has asked the money-lender to hold his staff (in which the money is hidden) while he swears to a judge (not shown) before an image of St Nicholas, that he has returned the money he borrowed. Although he has kept to the word of his oath, it was clearly made in bad faith and the man will receive his just punishment in the following scene (panel 22).
