Panel 05 - Nativity of St Nicholas; the miracle of his first bath
Description:
One of the more unusual miracles ascribed to St Nicholas is that when the midwives bathed him, immediately after his birth, he stood up in the bath unaided. Curiously, the artists here have taken the trouble to show the episode containing this miracle but have not included the all-important detail of the infant saint standing up, opting instead for a perfectly conventional nativity bath scene. The head of the midwife to our left is a later repair.
