Panel 17 - Eye witnesses to the miracles in the adjacent panels
The role of eye witnesses within the image as a surrogate for the external viewer has been widely discussed in relation to later periods of art. It is oftern overlooked however that they were a common feature of medieval art as well. These two figures have no direct role in the window's narrative but serve as models of the kind of engaged, active viewing expected of those of us viewing events from outside the image.
