Panel 09 - Martin is appointed as an exorcist by St Hillaire
Sulpicius (chapter V) relates how Martin was made a deacon by St Hilaire, Bishop of Poitiers, who, recognising Martin's worth, sought to bind him more closely to the Church. Knowing however that the young man's modesty would lead him to refuse any higher office, he appointed him to as an exorcist - a position regarded as both dangerous and lowly, and hence one he knew that Martin would not turn down for fear of appearing vain.
