Panel 01 - Signature Panel (Bakers preparing dough)
<< previous scene | next scene >>
Description: A baker with sleeves rolled up and hair tied in a scarf mixes a large batch of dough in a special trough while an assistant stands by with a jug of water heated in the cauldron by his side. The curious bearded head in the lump of dough is a mystery. Jane Welch WIlliams has suggested it is an exegetical commentary on sacramental bread but it is more likely to be a stop-gap fragment used by a later restorer - closer examination shows that the painting style is quite different from the rest of the window. |
