Bay 3 - The 'New Alliance'

Panel 01 - Killing a pig

Description:
This is one of three 'signature' or 'donor' panels at the base of this window, each showing butchers at work. Here, a man is about to stun a pig with the back of his axe head. His butcher's knife is visible to the right of the panel, on top of his green cloak.

The motif of a peasant killing a pig is one of the standard elements in the medieval "labours of the month" cycles which appear in portal sculpture and in the calendar sections of illuminated psalters. Here it serves simply to illustrate the butcher's work.
